IMMIGRANTS’ RIGHTS GROUP

Nikolas De Bremaeker

Supervising Attorney

Nikolas De Bremaeker’s practice is centered primarily on defending community members at risk of deportation. Previously, Nikolas worked as a staff attorney for another La Raza organization, La Raza Community Resource Center, in the San Francisco Mission District. During the height of the Trump administration’s family separation crisis, while working with Americans for Immigrant Justice, Nikolas was one of four attorneys authorized to enter the Homestead Child Detention Center to protect the rights of arriving unaccompanied children. At Immigrant Defenders Law Center, Nikolas spent time on both sides of the Mexico-United States border, defending asylum seekers detained by ICE or affected by the Migrant Protection Protocols introduced in 2019. Besides providing direct legal assistance, Nikolas, in his role as Co-Chair of the American Bar Association’s ILS International Refugee Law Committee, focuses his practice on policy advocacy with international institutions and legislators in the United States and Europe to support the right to asylum. He further serves on the American Bar Association’s Leadership Delegation to the United Nations. Born and raised in Brussels, Nikolas’s devotion to human rights stems from the experiences of his grandfather, who was a victim of Nazi persecution and fled Belgium as a refugee. In his spare time, Nikolas enjoys exploring the redwood forests of Northern California and attending astrophysics seminars in his hometown of Berkeley.
